Academic Learning Architecture

Designing 15 undergraduate and graduate courses as one coherent learning system.

A strong academic program is more than a collection of individual courses. Each course must serve its own purpose while contributing to a broader developmental journey.

For this university partnership, I designed the learning architecture for 15 courses: nine undergraduate and six graduate. The work included full course design, instructional structure, assessment strategy, faculty resources, and learning-management-system content.

The Challenge

The university needed a coherent academic program that translated organizational expertise into rigorous, teachable, and assessable learning experiences.

The courses needed to:

  • meet academic expectations;

  • reflect clear program outcomes;

  • serve learners at different levels;

  • maintain consistency across instructors;

  • connect theory with practical application;

  • function effectively within the university’s learning systems.

The challenge was not simply to write 15 syllabi. It was to build a connected academic architecture.

My Role

I led the design of the full course system, including:

  • course purposes and outcomes;

  • weekly modules;

  • learning activities;

  • readings and resources;

  • assignments;

  • assessments;

  • grading rubrics;

  • instructor guidance;

  • discussion prompts;

  • LMS organization;

  • alignment between course and program outcomes.

I worked with academic leaders, subject-matter experts, instructors, organizational stakeholders, and technology teams throughout the process.

The Approach

Design from program outcomes backward

The work began by clarifying what learners should understand and be able to do by the completion of the program.

Each course was then positioned within that larger journey. This prevented unnecessary duplication and helped ensure that learning developed progressively rather than restarting with each class.

Differentiate undergraduate and graduate learning

The undergraduate courses emphasized foundational understanding, application, and structured skill development.

The graduate courses required greater integration, critical analysis, synthesis, leadership judgment, and the application of learning to complex organizational contexts.

Create consistency without over-standardizing

Each course followed a shared design logic so learners and instructors could navigate the program with confidence.

At the same time, the architecture allowed each course to preserve its distinct subject matter, assignments, and learning purpose.

Build for instructors as well as students

The course materials were designed to support faculty implementation, not merely student participation.

Instructor resources included:

  • teaching guidance;

  • grading criteria;

  • discussion facilitation notes;

  • assignment expectations;

  • assessment rubrics;

  • module-level context.

This reduced ambiguity and strengthened consistency across sections and instructors.

Connect knowledge with practice

Coursework was designed to move beyond information recall.

Learners were asked to interpret, apply, evaluate, create, and connect concepts to realistic leadership and organizational situations.

The Outcome

The completed architecture included:

  • nine undergraduate courses;

  • six graduate courses;

  • full syllabi and module structures;

  • aligned learning outcomes;

  • assignments and assessments;

  • grading rubrics;

  • instructor resources;

  • LMS-ready content.

The result was a unified academic program rather than 15 isolated courses.
